Is it even feasible? Due to a Chromebook being run on a Linux-based (or web-based) operating system.

There are other articles out there that say that it cannot be done, but in this article, we will show how it may be possible to play the ever so popular game on that budget-friendly “laptop”.

Can a Chromebook run “The Sims 4”?

Yes, but it all depends on the hardware or specs of your device.

If you can meet the storage, memory, video, and CPU requirements, the only roadblock that you will encounter is the operating system.

The game runs on either Windows or MAC OS, but the Chrome OS installed on that small laptop is Linux-based, which is not compatible with TS4’s minimum requirements.

There is a work-around to “bypass” the operating system, but more on that later.

Beforehand, we need to know if everything else in terms of requirements passes aside from the OS prerequisite.

Meeting the system requirements to play the game.

To check if the rest of the hardware is enough to run “The Sims 4”, we go on PCGameBenchmark.

On that page, put in your Chromebook’s CPU (Processor), GPU (Graphics card), and RAM (Memory) capacity.

Note: For the Platform(OS), put it in Windows or macOS, otherwise, the game will not pass and won’t be listed as playable games.

Then, click on “What Games Can My PC Run?” to see if your machine can play the game. If it is not listed, then your Chromebook isn’t powerful enough to meet the requirements.

How to play Sims 4 on Linux?

Short answer, through Steam.

Installing Steam on your Chromebook is the key to playing “The Sims 4” on it, as it is available through its vast library of games and there is a way of installing it through the instructions found on BeeBom.com.

Read their article about “How to Install and Play Steam Games on a Chromebook in 2022” for the step-by-step guide on how to do so.

Once installed on your device, at one point, you will need to change the settings in Steam and enable “Proton Experimental”, which is a feature that allows you to play Windows games on a Linux-based operating system.

That is how you bypass the OS requirement of the game, so if your Chromebook specs meet the other requirements then you should not have any issues playing the game.

Alternatives to “The Sims 4”

If you cannot play sims 4 on a Chromebook due to system requirements, or not wanting to install Steam, or even if you already own it outside the Steam platform and you don’t want to buy it again, then you can get one of the mobile versions which are similar.

If the game is among your favorites and you can’t get enough, an easy alternative for the game would be to get the “The Sims FreePlay” or the “The Sims Mobile” apps from the PlayStore on your Chromebook. Although they are free to install, there are still “in-app” purchases made available from some premium content.

Final thoughts

There you have it. Provided your Chromebook is performant enough to play the game, installing Steam is the key to getting it to work.

If you don’t already own it on Steam, then you can wait for a sale to come up, as it can go for cheap. At the time of writing this article, the price had gone down by 88% for a limited time.

So let’s go full “Steam” ahead and game on.
